What is Burns Night?

Burns Night is all about celebrating the life of Robert Burns. The first Burns Supper took place in 1801, when his friends gathered to remember him, since then it’s become an annual tradition in Scotland. The night usually includes a special meal called the Burns Supper of haggis, neeps (turnips) and tatties (potatoes), along with reciting Burns poetry, especially the famous Address to a Haggis. Christmas celebrations in Scotland

Christmas in Scotland is a joyful time filled with festive traditions, family gatherings and delicious food. Scots celebrate Christmas with as much enthusiasm as anywhere else. Homes are decorated with lights and Christmas trees. Traditional Scottish treats like shortbread and mince pies are popular, while Christmas markets and events bring a festive atmosphere to towns and cities across the country.

Christmas was banned for 400 years!

Did you know Christmas was once banned in Scotland? In the 1600s, the Scottish Parliament stopped all Christmas celebrations. They believed the holiday was too closely linked to Catholic traditions and a bit too rowdy! For nearly 400 years, Christmas wasn’t officially celebrated in Scotland and it wasn’t until 1958 that it became a public holiday again. Thankfully, things have changed and now Christmas is widely celebrated, just like in many other parts of the world.

Winter Solstice

Long before Christmas, the ancient Scots celebrated the winter solstice, marking the return of longer days. They would bring greenery like holly and ivy into their homes to symbolise life during the dark winter. Mistletoe was also important as it represented fertility. Today this tradition carries on with mistletoe hung in doorways, for people to share a kiss under it.

The Yule log

The Yule log is another tradition that dates back to Scotland’s winter solstice celebrations. Burning the Yule log in the fireplace symbolised bringing warmth and light back into the home during the darkest time of the year. Nowadays, the tradition has evolved and many Scots place candles in their windows during Christmas, continuing the idea of bringing light into their homes.

Burning Rowan

A unique Scottish Christmas tradition is burning a twig from the rowan tree. The rowan tree is thought to protect against evil spirits and burning a twig during Christmas helps clear away bad feelings and encourages harmony between family and friends.

Hogmanay is Scotland’s New Year celebration

As Christmas ends, the focus shifts to Hogmanay, Scotland’s famous New Year’s Eve celebration. Christmas and Hogmanay traditions are in Scotland’s history and Hogmanay is an exciting time filled with traditions.

First Footing

One of the most popular Hogmanay traditions is the First Footing. After midnight, the first person to enter your house is thought to bring good luck for the New Year. They often bring a gift like shortbread or whisky, symbolising good cheer for the year ahead.

Auld Lang Syne

Hogmanay wouldn’t be complete without a rendition of Auld Lang Syne. This famous song, written by Scotland’s poet Robert Burns, is sung at the stroke of midnight. Everyone joins hands to sing it, saying goodbye to the old year and welcoming the new one. It’s a tradition that’s loved not just in Scotland but all over the world.

Fire Rituals

Fire plays a big part in Hogmanay traditions. Torchlight processions, bonfires and fireworks are all used to welcome the New Year and drive away darkness. That’s why taking a break in January or February is a great idea – especially somewhere beautiful and in warm, comfortable accommodation. Things to do at Loch Lomond this winter

Whether you are coming on a family break to Loch Lomond or with friends, there are plenty of activities to keep you busy. 

One of the most exciting things you can do here is a ride on a seaplane. Operating all year round, Loch Lomond Sea Planes let you see Scotland from above. Winter can be the best time of year to do this, as the air is often clear and the colours vibrant. Choose from flights over the west coast and the Isle of Bute, as well as views of Jura, Islay and Gigha. 

For something more ground-based, Loch Lomond Shores offers year-round activities. From shopping, food and drink to outdoor activities, this will keep you busy all day. It’s a super place to bring the kids when on holiday at Loch Lomond. It has a playpark, mini-golf as well as a Sea Life Centre. If the weather isn’t quite what you’d hoped for, visit here and it won’t matter. 

Look out for winter wildlife

Winter in Loch Lomond is a great time to spot wildlife, with many species making the most of the colder months. If you’re hiking in the mountains, you might be lucky enough to see a Ptarmigan or Arctic Hare, both of which turn white in winter to blend in with the snow. Down in the lower areas, red deer are more likely to be seen as they find food and you may even catch a glimpse of a native red squirrel, though they’re a bit less active in winter. Loch Lomond is also a hot spot for bird watching. The area provides a home to nearly 200 species of bird, so don’t forget your binoculars.

If you are short on time and want to make the most of what you have in Loch Lomond to spot wildlife, then get in touch with a safari company like Kestrel Wildlife Safaris. They can take you to the best spots to give you the best chance of seeing the animal of your choice. Local knowledge is crucial in this situation, as animals can move depending on the time, weather and where the best food is.

Capture beautiful photographs

The days are short at this time of year, but the light is just stunning. For anyone keen on photography, this is the time to come for those sunset shots. The air can also be crisp and clear, giving you views for miles. If you are looking to see the area covered in snow, January and February in Loch Lomond are good times to visit.

Of course, we can’t guarantee the weather, but if you are lucky then the snow-capped hills and mountains are beautiful. Snow on Ben Lomond makes a great photograph. Walking up the mountain when snowy is something we would only recommend to experienced hikers at this time of year, but the view from the top can be breathtaking.

Go stargazing and spot the Northern Lights

While spotting the Northern Lights isn’t always guaranteed, Loch Lomond is a great place to try and see them, especially in the winter when the nights are longer and darker. To improve your chances, visit one of the park’s ‘dark sky’ areas, where there’s little light from towns or cities. These spots let you see more stars and if you’re lucky, you might catch the beautiful colours of the Northern Lights lighting up the sky over Loch Lomond.

It’s also a good time to keep an eye open for meteor showers. The Quadrantids occur towards the end of December and start of January and are known for producing bright fireball meteors. The look as though they originate from the plough/big dipper constellation, and are at their peak usually in the first few days of the year. Here’s a list of dates for all meteor showers to look out for in the UK.

Enjoy the long nights together

The nights may be long, but that only means more time together in the warmth! We have plenty of pubs, bars and restaurants near us at Loch Lomond Waterfront. Most of the local villages have at least one pub and you will be made welcome there. We’ve highlighted some of our favourite eateries and pubs here, but don’t be afraid to go and find some yourself.

Over the festive period, you could see a Christmas show in one of the nearby towns. If you find yourself here on the 25th of January, it’s Burns Night when we celebrate our most famous poet, Robert Burns. Most places will offer a Burns Supper, which is haggis, neeps and tatties, washed down with a wee dram. Some places might even pipe the haggis in with bagpipes! Have a look at nearby restaurants to see what is on offer and experience this Scottish celebration. 

But if you just want to spend some time together inside, then when in Scotland, do as the Scottish do and enjoy a nip or dram of whisky. What are the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights or aurora borealis are a natural light display that occurs near the Earth’s poles. They result from particles charged by the sun colliding with Earth’s upper atmosphere along magnetic lines, creating a colourful show in the sky with shades of green, purple and red. These auroras include the aurora borealis (Northern Lights) and the aurora australis (Southern Lights).

Chasing the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights are unpredictable but there are ways to increase your chances of seeing them. Check the aurora forecast on websites like AuroraWatch UK and SpaceWeatherLive, which provide real-time updates on aurora activity. Once you have a good forecast, make sure to wrap up warmly. The Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park can be very cold, especially during the winter months when the Northern Lights are most active. Layer up with a warm coat, hat, gloves and boots to stay cosy while waiting for the lights. Afterwards, you can warm up with a whisky in your lodge.

Finding the perfect location

To see the Northern Lights you need to find a dark location away from light pollution. Luckily for you, many of the skies above Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park are known as dark skies. There’s a higher chance of seeing the Northern Lights during the winter months when the nights are longer and darker. Winter is also the best time to go stargazing in Scotland when the nights are darker for longer. Between October and March, when the clocks go back for winter, is a good rule of thumb.

How to photograph the Northern Lights

Nighttime photography can be challenging, but capturing the Northern Lights is possible even with a mobile phone. Hold your phone in landscape mode, turn off the flash and select night mode. Make the picture as large as your phone allows and set the exposure time between 2 and 15 seconds.

Winter

Average temperatures range from lows of 1°C to highs of 7°C. Winter in Loch Lomond can be quite cold, so pack plenty of warm clothing, including thermal layers, hats, scarves, and gloves. It’s also essential to have sturdy footwear for walking on icy surfaces. Summer (June to August) is the peak tourist season, with warmer temperatures and extended daylight hours. We see average lows of 9°C and highs of 19°C. The loch is at its busiest, attracting visitors from near and far. Outdoor activities such as boating, swimming and picnicking are popular choices, as the weather is generally pleasant and ideal for water-based adventures. 

With warmer temperatures and longer daylight hours, it’s important to stay protected from the sun. Pack sunscreen, hats and sunglasses to shield yourself from harmful UV rays. Shake off the last remnants of winter and come to Loch Lomond in February during the school break. There are plenty of activities to keep the kids busy, and lots of family adventures too so you can spend time together. 

February still has a chill in the air, but with a warm jumper and a flask of coffee, almost anything is possible! Here are some of our suggestions on things to do with the family during the February half term holidays. 

Walks & Tours

The Scottish Snowdrop Festival is in full swing during February. This is a great opportunity to take a walk through some beautiful gardens near Loch Lomond and admire the Scottish outdoors. It’s great for small kids as there are usually paths to walk around. Linn Botanic Gardens in Helensburgh has previously taken part, and is well worth a visit. Of course, you don’t have to go somewhere specific if you want to see snowdrops – they can be found all around our beautiful region. 

Even if the weather isn’t ideal for walking, the views around Loch Lomond are always spectacular form a car or bus window. There are beautiful drives around the water, through glens and under mountains. And if you want the whole family to be able to enjoy the views, consider taking a guided tour. 

Whilst February isn’t necessarily the best time to go mountain climbing – especially if you are inexperienced – there are still plenty of walks to go on which are suitable at this time of year. From goning on a Faerie Trail to going on a 4×4 adventure, there will be plenty to get on with. 

Nature & Wildlife

It’s also a great time to enjoy some of Loch Lomond’s wildlife. There is less grass and leaves for them to hide in! The RSPB Loch Lomond Reserve, only a short drive from us here at Loch Lomond Waterfront, is a great place to spot local birds. At this time of year, you’ll see Greenland white-fronted and pink-footed geese. Have you ever seen thousands of geese take flight? It’s a sight to behold. 

Finally, if you visit Loch Lomond in February, you might be in for a night sky treat. We’re situated in an area with little light pollution, so the night sky is dazzling with stars. This also means we are in a great position to see the Northern Lights when they show. They’ve produced some stunning displays before – hopefully they’ll make an appearance for you this February half term!
