Duncryne Hill (The Dumpling)

Spectacular Views from Duncryne Hill

Duncryne Hill, also known as The Dumpling, is one of our favourite wee gems of Loch Lomond. A small hill, at just 465 feet above sea level. You can climb to the top in approximately 20 minutes and the ascent is relatively short, but the views you get from the top are magnificent!

How to find it

Located in the village of Gartocharn, not far from Balmaha on the eastern shores of Loch Lomond. Access to the top is available via Duncryne Road. There are small number of parking bays on Duncryne Road, and further car parking at the Millennium Hall in Gartochan village. You can’t miss Duncryne Hill, just south of the village, with its distinct dumpling shape.

The walk

The path to the top of Duncryne Hill is short, but quite steep.  It is rocky and muddy in places, however the walk is fairly simple and should only take around 20 minutes. Allow a further 20 minutes to get back down, plus plenty of time to admire the spectacular view from the top.

You can find full walking instructions here from WalkHighlands.

The view

From the top of the hill, you get the most amazing view of the Highland mountains, Loch Lomond and its islands.

The famous Scots climber and adventurer Tom Weir lived in Gartocharn and Duncryne Hill was one of his favourite walks. He described the view from the top as ”the finest viewpoint of any small hill in Scotland.’ And we must agree!

Testimonials

  • A perfect place to relax

'Stayed at the Waterfront Lodges for a Fri to Mon short break for our daughters birthday last weekend. Lodge was placed right on the edge of Loch Lomond with stunning views.'
  • Right up there with the best

'We have travelled the world and stayed in all sorts of accommodation - Loch Lomond Waterfront is right up there with the best. The facilities, quality of fixtures and fittings and the setting all add up to a superb holiday experience and one that I have no hesitation in recommending to anyone. Outstanding!'
  • Stunning from top to bottom

'We booked this to relax after a family tragedy and it was the perfect tonic. Stunning from top to bottom. The rooms were perfect with all the facilities needed. The hot tub on a winters evening took it to another level. The blackout curtains, allied to no light pollution outside, meant wakening up was the most natural I had experienced for years.'
  • Outstanding location

'The location is outstanding - right on the edge of Loch Lomond with private water frontage and beaches. As a location for exploring, again this rates very highly. We easily accessed central Glasgow by train from nearby Balloch and also explored Stirling (particularly the castle and Wallace memorial), the Falkirk Wheel and even Perth and Pitlochry by car. It is a very peaceful place, which can only be disturbed on occasion by your neighbours but with the Slumber Charter in place, we had absolutely no problems overnight.'
  • Everything was more than perfect

'Everything was more than perfect, more than what we can ask for. And the view priceless, the whole stay was priceless, so thank you ever so much, hope to see you soon.'
