Ben Lomond walks & trails

Ben Lomond walks are a popular excursion for visitors to Loch Lomond Waterfront. It is one of Scotland’s most popular mountains and the most southerly of Scotland’s 282 Munros. These are mountains over 3,000ft / 914m. Over 40,000 people visit Ben Lomond each year for its walks, wildlife and stunning views over Loch Lomond.

Whether you are an experienced hiker or out for a day with the family, there’s plenty of things to do here. So here’s a rundown of some of the most popular activities.

Family fun at Ben Lomond

Spending time around Ben Lomond can mean delving into history. The Ardess Hidden History Trail is a great way kids can explore the area, and find out about the people who used to live there. It’s a circular route with great views of the loch, and takes at least an hour to do. You can also book guided tours from National Trust for Scotland guides to really get the most out your visit.

Climbing and Cycling Ben Lomond

The route up Ben Lomond is accessible to most people of a reasonable fitness level. There is a path most of the way up, with great views throughout (assuming the weather is good!). It’s important to be fully prepared for a climb though. Although it might be warm and sunny at the bottom, it can easily turn cold and wet by the time you reach the summit. Be sure to take layers of clothes, plenty of food and water and always let someone know where you are going.

The route to the top takes you through woodland and open fields, making it a great walk to spot wildlife. Keep an eye out for ptarmigans, black grouse and pine martins! Dogs are, of course, very welcome on Ben Lomond, but do keep them under control as sheep and cattle graze the area.

The Ben Lomond Hill Path can also be used by mountain bikers. It offers rugged terrain and is a great way to see the countryside. Also, as the path is popular with walkers, some bikers prefer going early in the morning to avoid the crowds and watch the sunrise. Check out the video below to see others cycling up Ben Lomond.

If you are looking to do some Munro bagging, then with its easy access, Ben Lomond is the perfect place to start.

Getting to Ben Lomond from Loch Lomond Waterfront

Fancy taking on the challenge of some Ben Lomond walks? It takes about an hour to drive to the Ben Lomond area from Loch Lomond Waterfront. Travelling via the A811 and B829 takes you through Queen Elizabeth Forest Park.

If you are planning a day of cycling, then it takes about two hours on bike, travelling along the West Highland Way. This takes you along the shore of Loch Lomond, and is a great ride.

An adventure for everyone

There’s something for everyone at Ben Lomond. Having a base at Loch Lomond Waterfront means you’ve got luxury self-catering accommodation to come back to whenever you are done for the day.
