Millennium Forest Trail

Millennium Forest & Craigie Fort Walk, Balmaha

Millennium Forest is a great walking trail, very close to us here at Loch Lomond Waterfront. The path takes you on a journey through native woodland, up to the remains of Craigie Fort, an Iron Age fort with a spectacular viewpoint over Loch Lomond. From here, you can see the loch and its islands, as well as the magnificent mountain Ben Lomond. This is a short walk, which takes less than an hour. And it is relatively easy with some steep and rocky sections. The views from the top are simply breathtaking!

The Walk

This walk starts in Balmaha village, just a 2-minute drive or 5-minute walk from Loch Lomond Waterfront. There is a large car park by the Visitor Centre, and the path begins near the back of the car park. Follow the trail through the forest and then up to the viewpoint at Craigie Fort. The continue down the other side to the shore and return to Balmaha. Look out for a variety of birds and other wildlife on this short walk, which should take less than an hour to complete. The path is easy to navigate, however take care on steep and rocky sections. You can find out more and download detailed walking directions here.

Craigie Fort

The highlight of the trail is the wonderful view from Craigie Fort. This Celtic fort or “oppidium” once formed a large enclosure around the summit of the hill. However, little remains today of the ancient site. This is still an incredible place to visit, as you can look out over Loch Lomond and its islands and can even admire the view of Ben Lomond in the distance. Easy to reach, this walk is a must when visiting Balmaha.

Testimonials

  • Such a beautiful setting

'Myself and my partner recently stayed in Drummond Lodge (from 21-24 Feb) and we just wanted to say thank you so much for a lovely stay. We loved our lodge, it was like a home from home, and we really didn’t want to leave! It was spotlessly clean and in such a beautiful setting. All the staff we met were really friendly. We also loved Balmaha, what a wonderful village. So thank you very much! We are the couple that took Flynn for a walk and we took this photo of him... we thought you’d appreciate a copy. Thanks once again...
  • Our own private beach

'Just walking along the West Highland way path past some of the crowded beaches made us realise the value of having your own private waterfront onto the loch.  I can still picture walking down to the lochside on our first evening and watching an osprey dive for a fish!'
  • A magical getaway

'It is not at all a surprise that you are fully booked.  If there is one place in the world we would like to be this summer, that place is Loch Lomond Waterfront Lodges, and I’m sure the only people who don’t share this passion are those, who simply have never been there. What a magical getaway and a retreat you have created! Thank you for that.'
  • Right up there with the best

'We have travelled the world and stayed in all sorts of accommodation - Loch Lomond Waterfront is right up there with the best. The facilities, quality of fixtures and fittings and the setting all add up to a superb holiday experience and one that I have no hesitation in recommending to anyone. Outstanding!'
