Buchanan Castle Golf Club

Golfing at Buchanan Castle Golf Club

Buchanan Castle Golf Club is one of Scotland’s hidden golfing treats. It was designed by James Braid in 1936 and boasts Conic Hill as a backdrop. This 18-hole course sits by the River Endrick, less than a 15-minute drive from Loch Lomond Waterfront. Visitors are very welcome, but make sure you book a tee time before arriving.

What’s more, guests staying at Loch Lomond Waterfront receive a special rate when booking a round at Buchanan Castle Golf Club. Please contact us for further details.

History of Buchanan Castle Golf Club

The golf club is set in the grounds of Buchanan Castle, a ruined Scottish castle. Originally built between 1852 and 1858, it was the grand home of the Duke of Montrose and family, Clan Graham. It remained as a family home until 1925, when the castle was sold. However, the family continue to hold the estate and it is still the seat of Clan Graham.

It first became a golf club around 1936, designed by renowned architect, James Braid. The castle became a hotel, but during World War II it was converted into a hospital and later an army education building. After the roof was removed, it fell into disrepair. But the golf course remained, reopening its full 18 holes after the war in 1947.

Today’s 18-hole parkland course has a par of 70, with tree-lined fairways. The greens are flat, but the course is challenging. The club has its own clubhouse, bar and dining room, practice course and pro shop.

How to get there

Getting to Buchanan Castle from Loch Lomond Waterfront is simple. The golf club is a ten-minute drive east on the B837, or a twenty-minute cycle. You can also walk there, taking around an hour or so next to a road and through some woodland. It’s very pleasant on a nice day.

  • Undisturbed site exclusivity

'We couldn't have asked for a better venue for our wedding. The flexibility and service that the staff of the venue provided was amazing and our wedding turned out to be the perfect day we had always hoped for. We had site exclusivity and we certainly weren't disturbed! it was so nice taking over such a large space and knowing the only faces we would see were our guests. We had a drinks reception and marquee down on the beach for 230 people but the next morning we used the function room to put on a breakfast of bacon butties...
