Buchanan Castle and Golf Club

A short history of Buchanan Castle

A trip to Buchanan Castle means a day exploring some of Scotland’s history, as well as time on a golf course. There’s something for everyone here!

Sat just off the A811 near Drymen, Buchanan Castle is a shadow of its former self. Originally built between 1852 and 1858, it was the grand home of the Montrose family. With beautiful turrets and a sweeping entrance, it resembled more a grand house than castle, but was still an impressive building.

In 1925 it was sold and converted into a hotel and golf course. But that didn’t last long as it was then converted into a hospital during World War 2. It is known as the hospital that received Rudolph Hess, Hitler’s Deputy Furher when he landed in Scotland to attempt to make peace. His next accommodation was the Tower of London.

In 1954, the roof of Buchanan Castle was removed in order to avoid paying taxes, and the inevitable decline of the building began. It now lies a ruin, covered in overgrown weeds, but still a remarkable sight to see. Sitting so close to Loch Lomond, this castle should definitely be on your to-do list.

The castle today

Buchanan Castle is a category B listed building as well as being included on the Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland. It can be a rather spooky experience walking about this abandoned site. It’s best to take it in from the outside though. There are fences and plenty of warnings about not stepping inside, as you can never tell with an old building like this if anything will fall on your head.

If you are curious to see what’s inside, it’s much safer to look at pictures online on check out the video below!

Golfing at Buchanan Castle Golf Club

For those who like a spot of golf, it would surely be foolish to come all this way and not play a round! Buchanan Castle Golf Club is one of Scotland’s hidden golfing treats. It was designed by James Braid in 1936 and boasts Conic Hill as a backdrop.

This 18 hole course sits by the River Endrick, and is barely a mile from Loch Lomond. Visitors are very welcome, but make sure you book a tee time before arriving. This is a beautiful Loch Lomond golf club that you have to visit when you stay with us.

How to get there

Getting to Buchanan Castle and the golf club from Loch Lomond Waterfront is simple. The golf club a ten-minute drive east on the B837, or a twenty-minute cycle. You can also walk there, taking around an hour or so next to a road and through some woodland. It’s very pleasant on a nice day.

  • Such a beautiful setting

'Myself and my partner recently stayed in Drummond Lodge (from 21-24 Feb) and we just wanted to say thank you so much for a lovely stay. We loved our lodge, it was like a home from home, and we really didn’t want to leave! It was spotlessly clean and in such a beautiful setting. All the staff we met were really friendly. We also loved Balmaha, what a wonderful village. So thank you very much! We are the couple that took Flynn for a walk and we took this photo of him... we thought you’d appreciate a copy. Thanks once again...
