Royal Troon

Royal Troon Golf Club

Around 60 miles south of Loch Lomond Waterfront, this is a great day trip for golfers during a stay with us. The journey takes less than 1.5 hours by car. Royal Troon is a challenging test of links golf. Home to both the longest and shortest holes in Open Championship golf at 123 and 601 yards respectively. Set on the south side of Glasgow near Prestwick Airport, the courses at Royal Troon are ideal for those looking for a bit of variety. Non-members are welcome at selected times and days, but please check the requirements and book in advance before making a trip.

The courses and facilities

The club formed in 1878 with just 5 holes, but this has grown and developed and it now has two 18-hole links courses, the Old Course and the Portland Course. Royal Troon is a stunning golf club, which has hosted the Open on several occasions, and many other important competitions. There is a pro shop and an excellent clubhouse with catering available. There is also equipment hire, caddies subject to availability and car parking facilities.

The Old Course is the championship course at Royal Troon. When the club hosted its first Open Championship in 1923, this course was redesigned and expanded by renowned golf course architect, James Braid. It is now one of the top links courses in Scotland, remaining very close to Braid’s century-old design.

The Portland Course dates from 1895 and is shorter in length than the Old Course. It is slightly further inland and more sheltered. Although not as famous as the Old Course, it is still regarded as a high-standard course with a good variety of holes.

Testimonials

  • Everything was more than perfect

'Everything was more than perfect, more than what we can ask for. And the view priceless, the whole stay was priceless, so thank you ever so much, hope to see you soon.'
  • Stunning from top to bottom

'We booked this to relax after a family tragedy and it was the perfect tonic. Stunning from top to bottom. The rooms were perfect with all the facilities needed. The hot tub on a winters evening took it to another level. The blackout curtains, allied to no light pollution outside, meant wakening up was the most natural I had experienced for years.'
  • A magical getaway

'It is not at all a surprise that you are fully booked.  If there is one place in the world we would like to be this summer, that place is Loch Lomond Waterfront Lodges, and I’m sure the only people who don’t share this passion are those, who simply have never been there. What a magical getaway and a retreat you have created! Thank you for that.'
  • Outstanding

'Chef in a lodge was outstanding. The food was excellent as was the service. Superb evening.'
  • 40th celebration

'My husband and I came here to celebrate my 40th birthday and we truly had a magnificent time. There was everything that you needed in your accommodation even washing liquid and conditioner for the washing machine. The hot tub and steam room were a real highlight as well as the living log fire.'
