Inchcailloch Island

Visiting Inchcailloch Island

Inchcailloch (or Inchcailleach) is one of the largest and most easily accessible of Loch Lomond’s 23 islands. It is a wonderful place to explore during a stay with us at Loch Lomond Waterfront, with a ferry service available from nearby Balmaha. The island is small enough to explore on foot and makes for a great family day out.

How to get to Inchcailloch Island

Balmaha Ferry

A ferry runs from Balmaha Boatyard to Inchcailloch Island throughout the summer months. Trips are available daily from around 9 am until 5 pm, usually every 30 minutes. No advance booking is required. Just turn up when you’re ready to go. The ferry takes you to North Pier on the north side of the island.

Cruise Loch Lomond

Cruise Loch Lomond offers a range of boat trips across Loch Lomond, including the Island Explorer. The cruise sails from Luss, passing many of the islands on the loch and making a stop at Inchcailloch. This is great if you prefer a more informative guided tour, because there is live commentary on board the cruise.

Things to do on Inchcailloch Island

Port Bawn Beach

The sandy beach at Port Bawn is great for beach walks, paddling, relaxation, picnics and also BBQs. Therefore its very popular on sunny days. This is a fantastic place to enjoy the sand and take in the open views out over the loch and beyond.

Inchcailloch summit

For the best views, climb the summit path. The trail is waymarked and takes you to the highest point on the island at 85 metres. From the top, you can admire a stunning panorama of the surrounding scenery. There is a bench at the summit, where you can sit and take it all in.

Church ruins and cemetery

The Gaelic name Inchcailloch means “island of the old woman”, after St Kentigerna, who is said to have lived there as a hermit in the 8th century. You can still see the ruins of a church dedicated to her memory, and some of Rob Roy’s relatives are said to be buried in the cemetery. This is a fascinating place to explore, with gravestones dating from the 13th century.

Wildlife spotting

Inchacailloch is a haven for wildlife, and there are plenty of nature walks. The island is wooded and provides a habitat for many species of birds and other animals. Look out for deer, otters, osprey, geese and so much more.

The staff are fantastic and so accommodating. We loved that we had so much flexibility over our choices, unlike at other venues! There was plenty of space within the private function rooms, which gave our guests plenty of room to socialise while hiding from the wet west coast weather on our big day! It was great not having to share our day with uninvited guests. The...
