Things to do in Balmaha, Loch Lomond

If you are visiting the east side of Loch Lomond then you are most likely heading to Balmaha. This quaint and very popular village nestles on the bonnie banks of this famous Scottish loch. And there are plenty of things to do when you visit making it the hub of the east side. So let’s take a look at some of the things to do and places to visit when you come along.

Conic Hill

If you want some physical exertion then why not take a wander up the popular Conic Hill which towers above Loch Lomond. Here you can park at the foot in a large car park and follow the well-trodden path that leads you to the top. And what a view when you get there! The spectacular scenery of Loch Lomond awaits you at the top. See all the islands that pepper its famous waters and be in awe of its beauty.

Food and Drink

There is a nice choice of places to refuel and hydrate when you visit. The Oak Tree Inn is a great stop for good pub grub and offers a proper country pub atmosphere. Super cosy with super tasty food you will be replenished nicely here. Furthermore, there is a bar if you fancy an alcoholic beverage. Next door, there is The Oak Tree Inn set at the foot of Conic Hill on the banks of Loch Lomond. Here you will enjoy delicious food and drink just minutes from your door. And if you wish you can bring your four-legged friend along too. If coffee and ice cream is your thing, St Mocha coffee shop and ice cream parlour is next to the Oak Tree Inn. Open from 10 pm daily this has become a popular stop for refreshments.

On the water

If you fancy heading to the water edge you can take a ferry from the north pier at Balmaha Boat Yard to Inchcailloch Island. Here you can explore this beautiful nature reserve and wander its choice of walking paths. Additionally, there is the Loch Lomond Waterbus that runs from Balmaha to Luss. Luss is a historic village on the west side of Loch Lomond and is also well worth a visit.

Balmaha Millennium Forest Walk

This walk sees you explore the mile-long Millenium Forest trail. A map in the Balmaha car park illustrates the route that takes you up Cragie Fort (a short steep climb) to a viewing point. Here you can see across Loch Lomond and marvel at the sights of Ben Lomond. Keep a lookout for red squirrels, they are known to inhabit this woodland! One of the Balmaha beaches you pass along the way is over a fun metal bridge by a steep rock face. And, should you wish to walk further, part of this walk links with the West Highland Way. So you can follow this route as long as you want and explore many of the beaches and bays along the way.

Tom Weir Statue

From the 1970s to 1987 Tom Weir became a well-known face on television with his long-running series Weir’s Way. Here he took viewers around Scotland to see the beauty of its countryside and inspired many with his warmth and passion. Having lived in Gartocharn, by Duncryne Hill he was just across the water from Balmaha. And now in honour of him, Balmaha is where his statue lives, the Tom Weir Statue. Unveiled in 2014, his statue is a popular tourist spot by the shores of the loch, known as Weir’s Rest. Here you can stop and enjoy the mountain garden, make use of the picnic tables, read up on the information panels and stop for a selfie with Tom himself.
