Bracklinn Falls Circuit

Bracklinn Falls

Just north east of local town Callandar, the Bracklinn Falls is a series of waterfalls on the Keltie Water. This beauty spot is part of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park and is popular for its spectacular scenery and great walks.

Bracklinn Falls Circuit

The Bracklin Falls Circuit is a circular walking route, taking in the falls, surrounding forest, river and mountain views. The route is way-marked from the Bracklinn Falls car park on Bracklinn Road. There is free parking here, but on busy days you may need to park in the town and walk up.

A striking wooden and copper footbridge, spanning a deep gorge, allows access to the falls. This gives a stunning high viewpoint over the gorge. At the falls, please take care because the ground may be slippery and there are some steep drops. There is a good path from here, which takes you through woodland towards the upper glen. The route then returns via a minor road back to the car park. For full walking instructions see the Walk Highlands website.

Interesting facts

The name Bracklinn comes from the Gaelic word “breac” (meaning speckled) and “linn” (meaning pool). This refers to the speckled, foaming waters of the river and falls.

Queen Victoria came to Bracklinn Falls in the 1870s and so an iron bridge was built for her visit. This remained in place until 2004, when flash floods destroyed it.

The falls were used as location during filming for Monty Python and The Holy Grail in 1975. This is where the “Message for you Sir” took place with Sir Lancelot and Concorde.

In 2010, a new 20-tonne footbridge as installed to replace the old iron bridge. It had to be hauled into place manually, as it wasn’t possible to use a crane. The following year the new Bracklinn Falls bridge was highly commended at the International Footbridge Awards.
